Kerpen, Germany - KZ2
2nd Match 2008
|
Testing – The kart was very good in testing and we were very quick in the dry and the wet. We knew that the set-up was good and we could see the big improvements that had been made since the last time we were at Kerpen in December.
Qualifying – We awoke to a wet track in the morning and the Gillard and AFR TM engines failed to disappoint. We were stupidly quick and put it on pole position 0.5 quicker than anyone else on the circuit.
Race 1 – Starting from pole position in the 35 kart field I knew I would have my work cut out. I made a bad start and the karts behind were all over the back of me in to turn one. I was tagged and I ended up slipping off the greasy surface and into the bark run off. I managed to keep it running though and rejoined in 11th. From there I managed to quickly come through pack before taking the lead on lap 9. We were very fast but unfortunately on lap 11 I touched a back marker with my left front. This didn’t stop me winning the first race but it would ruin my chances in the coming two races. We won the race buy 1.5 seconds from Simon Solgat.
Race 2 – We new there was something wrong with the left hand side of the kart and we changed the bent king pin bolt for race 2. We failed to see that the bearings inside the left stub had however collapsed this would effectively ruin the karts handling and make the kart understeer a lot. I started from pole again after winning the first race. But made a huge error on the grid as I forgot to shift into first as we approached the grid and when the lights went out I was in second gear and obviously this meant I got a terrible start which was made even worse when I span on the first lap. I was down in 16th after the first lap. The kart was terrible and we had stupid amounts of understeer. We still managed to salvage a few points though as I finished 7th.
Race 3 – We changed all the bearings for race 3 but after 15 laps of torture the left front tire had worn in a very funny position. I started the race from 7th and got boxed in at the start and fell back to 10th.
For the first part of the race the kart was shocking and the understeer problem was horrendous we didn’t make any progress. By lap 8 though the tire had cleaned up and the kart began to come back to some kind of normality. We came through to finish 5th. Unfortunately the front left stub bearings had ruined our chances of winning. Simon Solgat took the overall win from Bas Lammers with me in joint 3rd with the Tonykart KSM driver.
The positives to take from this weekend had to be the pace we had found in the dry. In practice we could go very quick and I believe we were probably the quickest. This shows were making good progress and by the first round of the WSK should be fighting right at the front.
I was also quite surprised at the end of the meeting find out we had finished 2nd overall in the Kerpen German KZ2 winter cup to Bas Lammers, especially since I didn't realise the two race meetings comprised a mini championship.
