Shenington - KZ1

17th February 2008

Testing – The first meeting of the year and I was looking forward to kicking off my season with a win here at Shenington. Testing went very well and we were able to do 44.3 second laps regularly. This put us around 4 tenths ahead of our nearest rivals Sam Moore, James Mudd and the Hibberts.

Heat 1 – There were 24 drivers on the grid with a mixture of KZ1 and KZ2 class tires. I started the first heat from 8th on the grid and got a superb start and managed to get to second at the first corner. I then went round the outside of the leader into Stratford Hairpin and then cruised to victory.

Heat 2 – I started 14th for heat two but got blocked in at the start by the guy in front who failed to get off the line. I dropped a few places but started making my way through the pack until on lap three I had some contact with Peter Baybutt and got a flat tire. I didn’t finish.

Final – After the bad second heat I had to start 12th for the final and new I had my work cut out with the leading KZ1 drivers occupying the front two rows of the grid. I got a good start and quickly picked my way through the pack. I was up to third by lap 5 but the leaders Sam Moore and James Mudd had opened up a 2 second lead by this point. I got my head down and caught the leading two within three laps. I followed James through when he passed Sam and then got James on the following lap. Once I was in the lead I eased off and took the Race win and set a new lap record in the process.

"It was a great result. We were in complete control of the race meeting and the AFR engines and Gillard chassis were once again very strong. This is a great way to start the season but if I am going to challenge for the European and WSK titles then I knew we would have to be able to dominate English meetings. All the hard work over the winter has paid off and I feel like were really making progress at the minute. 4th at the Winter Cup back in December was a great results and since then we have moved our game on along way. Hopefully this will allow me to fight for the same title in 2 weeks time in Kerpen, Germany. With a host of high profile KZ1 and KZ2 drivers expected to enter it is not going to be easy but I have full confidence in my equipment and ability to be able to take the fight to them."
